Decorating Cupcakes with Pennants (Cake Bunting)

Print Friendly and PDF

Pennants (sometimes called cake bunting) are such a festive way to decorate cupcakes and cakes.  I've loved the examples of this that I've seen on Kara's Party Ideas, The TomKat Studio, and an entire Pinterest Board by Kiki La Ru. I've noticed that the pennants are always tied to dowels, skewers, or straws.  I thought that it might be cute to tie them to something edible.  In the image above, I tied the pennants to my homemade Pocky Sticks

Here are a few other edible stick ideas to inspire you: lollipops, reception sticks, pretzels, Pirouettes, KitKats, and rock candy.  Leave your edible stick ideas in the comments!

To make the pennants, fold red, white, and blue paper in half.  Cut out a row of triangles along the crease of each sheet (you'll end up with diamonds).  Glue the diamonds on a piece of string and tie the string to your stick of choice.

Happy Fourth of July!!

P.S. If you are looking for some July 4th cupcake flavor ideas, check out my July 4th cupcake post.

  1. you can take royal icing and pipe it into a stick. then let it harden. maybe you could even cover it in chocolate. but that might melt. :(

  2. Take skewers (trimmed to needed size) and coat them with melted white chocolate wafers --they come in all sorts of colors. :) Roll in sprinkles if desired. Stick in Styrofoam or something supportive until hardened.
