I consider my Oreo frosting a success! It was perfect on the Oreo cupcakes, but it would also be great on any plain chocolate or vanilla cupcake. Even a box mix cupcake would be kicked up many notches if you topped it with homemade Oreo frosting.
Oreo Frosting Recipe
- 8 oz package of cream cheese, room temperature
- 1/4 C butter, room temperature
- 3-4 C powdered sugar (use more or less depending on how stiff you want the frosting to be)
- 1/2 t vanilla extract
- 3/4 C crushed Oreos (I crushed them in the food processor to be sure the pieces would be really tiny and wouldn't get stuck in my piping tips. If you are going to spread the frosting, it might be fun to use bigger chunks of Oreo. Also, I used my homemade Oreo cookies which aren't standard size - so I can't tell you exactly how many Oreos 3/4 of a cup is.)
- Whip cream cheese and butter until light and fluffy.
- Mix in powdered sugar one cup at a time.
- Add vanilla extract.
- Gently stir in crushed Oreos.
I think I have found my weekend project with 4 girls under the age of 7! :) Oreo madness, here we come!

ReplyDeleteHi Stef - Can you please what type/brand of cream cheese is to be used for this? i have never had cream cheese fronsting so i am not sure what type to buy?
ReplyDeleteYou can use any brand of cream cheese - just make sure not to get a kind that is already whipped.
ReplyDeleteHey everyone!
ReplyDeleteFor the people who were asking about how many oreos are needed for 3/4 of a cup:
I went to the grocery store (you can probably find them at your nearest 7-11 convenience store as well!) and found a cup of oreos that contains EXACTLY 3/4 cup when crushed! It's called "Mini Oreos Bite-size Go-Pak" They're not as big as normal oreos, but i'm assuming it'll work out to be ok!
Does it taste like cream cheese?
ReplyDeleteAnon - It taste more like cheesecake than regular cream cheese.
ReplyDeleteMade this frosting tonight for oreo cupcakes and it is heaven! Tastes JUST like oreo cheesecake. Ate some with a spoon. YUM!!!

ReplyDeleteI am looking for a yummy icing for Crust crumbling and the inner layers of a cake. They say to use a butter cream frosting. This sounds so delicious! Do you think this could work as a replacement?
ReplyDeleteAnon - I don't see why not!
ReplyDeletehow many does it make?
ReplyDeleteAnon - It depends on how big a swirl you make. With a medium sized swirl, I can easily frost 12 cupcakes.

DeleteMy daughter Morgan loves Oreo cookies! We will be making the oreo filling by using the "Whonu nutrition oreo cookies" instead of using the regular mini oreos! I will let you know. Thank you for all your recipes!
ReplyDeleteHI Stef!
ReplyDeleteI love using cream cheese frosting on EVERYTHING! but for some reason i can never get it right...it always turns out way too runny and i end up using a lot more confectioners sugar than i should, to thicken it up and it just turns out a horrible, way-too-sweet mess! When you whip the cream cheese, should it end up having the texture of whipped cream? Could I possibly be over or under whipping it?
Pleeeeeeeease help!
Regards from South Africa:)
make sure you include butter when whipping. Also check that both the butter and cream cheese are at room temperature; don't try to melt it or whip it when it's still too cold.
DeleteYou shouldn't need to use too much sugar and you should be able to enjoy delicious, cream cheese frosting on anything! Good Luck! :)
3-4 Cups of sugar sounds like a lot!
ReplyDeleteLast time I used that much for icing, it turned out really, really, sweet. Too sweet.
I've been seeing 3-4 cups of icing sugar on a lot of frosting recipes lately but I just can't get my head around it. Why so much icing sugar?!?!
